Using ChatGPT for Your Business Plan—10 Prompts and a Word of Caution

AI writing tools like ChatGPT are changing how entrepreneurs and professionals approach content creation. These tools can be incredibly useful—for early drafting, structure exploration, or unlocking writer’s block.

However, a business plan is NOT content; it’s a legal document. AI is a drafting assistant, not a strategic substitute. Especially when your business plan is tied to something serious, like a visa application, an investor pitch, or a bank loan. Human expertise still matters. A weak business plan can permanently shape how adjudicators, investors, or lenders view your readiness.

That said, when used properly, ChatGPT can help you move from a blank page to a structured draft. Below are ten prompts that work—and notes on when to stop relying on AI and consult a professional.

1. “Write a basic business plan outline for a [industry] company targeting [customer type]”

This is useful for getting a high-level structure. You’ll get sections like Executive Summary, Market Analysis, Marketing Strategy, Operations, and Financials. Use it as a map, not a finished product.

Pro Tip: Replace the placeholders with specific details (e.g., “fintech company targeting early-stage SMBs in Ontario”).

2. “Give me a sample Executive Summary for a startup that helps [solve problem] in [location/industry]”

This helps you see how to open your plan. AI can generate readable summaries, but they’ll be generic unless you feed it real details. Use this to identify tone and flow—not final content.

3. “List potential strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats for a [industry] business in [market]”

SWOT analysis is where ChatGPT shines. It can offer solid brainstorming material, especially when you’re analyzing unfamiliar competitors or market trends. But always verify assumptions.

4. “Create a five-year revenue and expense projection template for a [business type] startup”

This prompt will not give you accurate numbers—but it can help you understand what rows and categories belong in your financials. Do not use AI to generate the actual numbers. That requires research, financial modeling, and market alignment.

5. “What are common risks for a [sector] startup entering the [country/market] market?”

This can be a smart way to surface overlooked issues—whether regulatory, operational, or logistical. It can also help you decide what needs to be addressed explicitly in the business plan to preempt reader concerns.

6. “Draft a company overview for a [describe your business in 1–2 lines]”

This is useful for internal clarity. Use it to test whether your business description is focused, concrete, and audience-appropriate. Then revise it based on your real strategy and capabilities.

7. “Write a sample hiring plan for the first 12 months of a [industry] company expanding into [region/city]”

AI can help you think through org charts and team structure, especially if you’re in early planning stages. Still, hiring assumptions must reflect real salary benchmarks and labor availability. Don’t let AI guess.

8. “Suggest marketing strategies for a new [product/service] launching in [market] with a [$] budget”

This can generate campaign ideas and channel lists. But strategy alignment (especially for B2B, regulated industries, or immigrant-founded ventures) needs a human touch. Use it to spark ideas, not finalize plans.

9. “Compare the pros and cons of operating as a [legal structure] in [country]”

Useful for founders unfamiliar with incorporation options (e.g., sole proprietorship, corporation, LLC). Use AI’s output to guide questions for your legal or accounting team—not as final advice.

10. “What should be included in a business plan for [purpose: immigration, funding, partnership, etc.]?”

ChatGPT can lay out useful section lists depending on the plan’s audience. But once you’re writing for immigration (e.g., EB-2 NIW, E-2, L-1A, Canada’s ICT or SUV) or finance (e.g., SBA loan, VC), this is where human expertise becomes essential.

Where ChatGPT Helps—and Where It Stops

Use ChatGPT To Do Not Use ChatGPT When
Build an outline or structure Applying for immigration programs (EB2 NIW, L-1A, E-2, ICT, etc.)
Brainstorm SWOT, risks, marketing ideas Creating financial projections tied to funding or compliance
Overcome writer’s block Preparing documents for lenders, regulators, or investors
Explore tone or phrasing Aligning with legal requirements or officer expectations

Using ChatGPT for Research

One of the many things that people overlook in business plans is RESEARCH. Data is foundational towards proving a product market fit. For your business plan, you can always use ChatGPT for starting the basis of your research. For research purposes, you can use the deep search function if you have a paid version. Better yet, you can use other LLMs, such as Perplexity, for better data gathering and analysis.

However, you should be warned: LLMs have a propensity to hallucinate and tend to falsify data. Never blindly rely on the numbers provided; always cross check and verify.

Why the Final Plan Still Needs a Human

Even a well-prompted AI draft has no understanding of:

  • Immigration law and visa adjudication standards
  • What data is required to support projections
  • The tone, structure, and specificity expected by immigration officers or investors
  • Narrative alignment across petitions, resumes, letters of support, and financial models

A professional business plan writer connects strategy to structure, aligns with compliance frameworks, and verifies that every claim in the document can stand up to scrutiny. AI can help you start. But the final document, especially one submitted as part of a legal or financial process, should be reviewed, adapted, and completed by someone who knows the ins and outs of the business.

Business plans are often treated as writing projects. They’re not. They are evidence, used by governments, lenders, and investors to evaluate your seriousness, your structure, and your fit. Accuracy, consistency, and professional alignment is paramount towards creating a professional business plan, and that cannot be achieved by AI>
